CAIRNS MUSEUM PROGRAM PACKED FULL OF JANUARY FUN FOR EVERYONE

MUSEUM NEWS: 4 JANUARY 2021

Cairns Museum’s inspiring Kids’ Audio Tour of guided and self-guided activities through the collection is a highlight of an exciting line-up of interests and activities for museum visitors of all ages this January.

Local actor/writer/director Rachel Terry from Box Jelly Theatre teamed up with Central Queensland University’s School of Education and the Arts to help develop the creative and playful audio tour designed for children aged nine to 10 years.

Suzanne Gibson, manager of Cairns Museum, said the Museum team, including the Children’s Program Leader, had enjoyed collaborating with other Cairns professionals to develop the project with the assistance of a Regional Arts Development Fund grant.

“The audio tour is available free of charge in the Museum on the children’s own devices, with QR codes linking the tour,” Ms Gibson said.

Other activities in January include the ‘Objects of Fascination’ temporary exhibitions of local private collections and, in association with the Cairns Historical Society, a series of informative talks: the Collections Explorer Series.

The first of the temporary exhibitions, ‘The Tinkerer’ is now open and will run until the 9th, showcasing Cairns resident Teddy Powell’s collection of model stationary steam engines.

These engines will come to life every day at the Museum, with Teddy Powell setting them in motion at 10.30am, 11.30am and 12.30pm throughout the week.

These working engines in miniature are attached to moving accessories such as a Ferris Wheel, Merry-Go-Round and cement mixer.

This will overlap with a presentation on stationary steam engines on January 7 by historian and mining heritage specialist Dr Jan Wegner, who will discuss the significant role steam power once played in agriculture and mining in the Far North.

The summer holiday program for youngsters aged five to 12 years will also continue until school resumes.

Themes change weekly and include that old favourite – slime making, learning about transport and making working models, creating mosaics, discovering the history of Morse Code and even making a Morse Code device to send their own secret messages.

Bookings are essential for all activities and places are limited. For more information about activities and cost details visit the Museum website now at www.cairnsmuseum.org.au.

Cairns Museum is located in the School of Arts Building on the corner of Lake and Shields streets in the city. Social distancing, sanitizing and other Covid-safe requirements will be in place.
