Cats and Dogs - All at Sea

This exhibition is a special treat for you and your animal companions. It is a combination of a touring exhibition, local community engagement and a display from the Cairns Museum collection. Cats and Dogs — All at Sea is the title of a touring exhibition produced by the Australian National Maritime Museum. It consists of black and white photographs made by the Sydney photographer Samuel Hood who went on board countless ships between 1900 and the 1950s. These carefully selected images show how much pets meant to seafarers in the past. They were trusted companions and protectors. In what were often long-lasting voyages, the animals worked on board exterminating pests but also acting as stress relievers for the crew.
