Entertain and educate the whole family these summer school holidays with the Cairns Museum holiday program.

Week one and two
13 - 22 December (Tues - Thurs)
Recycled object Christmas craft

4-12 years
Get ready for Christmas by decorating a variety of recycled craft materials to create unique, one-of-kind ornaments. Get into the spirit of giving by saving rubbish from heading to the bin and give it a new life as Christmas décor you will treasure for years to come.

Week three
28 & 29 December
Reduce, reuse, recycle & welcome in our New Year!
10:30 – 11:30am
4-12 years
Using recycled and salvaged materials from parties and events of the bygone year, make a celebratory popper that you can set off after using our specially crafted Count Down Counters for your New Year’s celebration!

Week four
3, 4, 5 January
Salvage your summer plastics
10:30 – 11:30am
4-12 years
Be a part of the first ever Cairns Museum collaborative bottle cap mural as we use our collection of salvaged bottle caps to create a display that will remind our community of the beauty and importance of recycling. Take home your own art resources made of recycled plastic and spread the message to friends and family.

Week five
10, 11, 12 January
Welcoming tropical guests

Honour our local sea life’s battle with marine plastics by rescuing garbage-bound items and reusing them to create a special sculpture of a turtle’s favourite meal.

Week six
17, 18, 19 January
Visions of the past and future

4-12 years
Make your own Hologram-Viewer from old plastic containers and use a special QR code to discover, in 3D, what it is we are saving in our plastics mission, and create a very vintage kid’s TV from paper craft of the 1950’s.

Marine couture scavenger hunt
10am – 4pm
Win a Cairns Museum Prize Pack! Follow the clues in our Temporary Exhibit, find bottle caps with codes-words written in them and ‘salvage’ a secret environmental message to enter our competition.

Colouring in competition
10am – 4pm
Suitable for all ages!
Could your artwork be the one displayed in the pride of place? Lucky winners will have their colouring in sheets framed and hung in the Kids Workshop Space for 2023 as well as a Cairns Museum Prize Pack!
Collect your sheet from Museum Reception and head to the Verandah to do your best work.
