STEAM With A Theme is a new educational program for little kids and their ‘significant adult’. The brainchild of New York-trained teacher and local mother Sari Lorner, STEAM with a Theme is a program devised in collaboration with Cairns Museum to provide an interactive, museum-based, teacher-led program to foster critical thinking and problem-solving skills. The program targets children aged between two and five.

Steam with a theme – Episode 7

In this episode, teacher Sari Lorner talks about turtles and how they navigate at sea by sensing the invisible lines of the magnetic field, similar to how sailors use a magnet. You will need:  One needle  A fridge magnet   Small flat floating object (a leaf or a piece of foil)  Water Compass (can use a smart phone compass)

In this episode, teacher Sari Lorner shows you how make your very own coral reef, using leftover arts and craft materials and recycled plastic and paper.  You will need:  Plasticine Cut up sponges Pipe Cleaners  Paddle Pop Sticks Recycled Paper  Pastic Bottles Tip: Don’t purchase anything new, just use up excess arts and craft supplies

In this episode, teacher Sari Lorner talks about jellyfish. Jellyfish are invertebrates. that means they have no bones, exoskeleton, or shell to protect them and the majority of their body is made up of water. You will need:  Bottle with a lid  Water Plastic Bag  Rubber Band  Scissors  Optional: Food colouring and skewer
