The purpose of Surf Life Saving is to keep us all safe in the water, regardless of our abilities or the local conditions. Here in North Queensland, that included keeping swimmers safe from deadly jellyfish stings.
From the 1960s, members of North Queensland Surf Life Saving clubs were instrumental in helping local doctors and scientists understand the behaviours, seasonality and effects of marine stingers. Their collaboration led to the treatments we use today, as well as the development of the first stinger suit.
Come and explore the wonderful history of Surf Life Saving in North Queensland at our new exhibition ‘Safe in the Water’, a collaboration with Surf Life Saving North Queensland, supported by Cairns Regional Council.
