STAR TREATMENT FOR SENIOR CITIZENS Museum News: 14 August 2019

Citizens 55 plus will receive the red-carpet treatment at Cairns Museum during Seniors Week.

Seniors Week from August 17 to 24 has a special welcome for older people with a unique opportunity to take in the exhibits and make the most of Cairns’ treasure trove of memories.

There will be a dedicated seniors’ daily tour at 11am that should pique the interest of anyone aged 55 plus – giving an in depth look at some of Cairns Museum’s most precious and fascinating items.

On Saturday, August 17 the museum will kick off the week of events by hosting a local history lecture with activities culminating in an open day on Saturday, August 24.

Suzanne Gibson, manager of Cairns Museum, said Seniors Week was a chance for the museum to share its amazing stories about living in the tropics.

“We have a remarkable collection of objects, photographs and records, presented in a fascinating and dynamic way.

“Seniors will recall a great deal of what we showcase, or will remember their parents or grandparents talking about those times.

“We are a diverse region with lots of tales to tell – many of them about the challenging and exceptional place we live in, from tourists to toads, cyclones to crocodiles and rainforest to railways.”

Ms Gibson said free entry to grandchildren with a grandparent for the open day on Saturday, August 24 will also help make the special week a time for the generations to come together.

“A group discount is also available for groups of 10 or so it’s a great chance to gather up some friends and family to travel back in time through Cairns’ rich history.”

Entry is $12 for seniors.

Cairns Museum is on the corner of Lake and Shield Sts in the Cairns School of Arts Building. It is open from Monday to Saturday 10am to 4pm.
