The Cairns Museum recognises the vastness of the digital world and understands just how much knowledge is out there. We have compiled a list of some of our favourite museums that offer a range of resources for little ones eager to learn and experience the wonder of the world.

STEAM at Home

Try our STEAM experiments at home! Suitable for ages 2 – 5, this interactive program has been devised to foster critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Watch each tutorial, and have fun with our collaborator Sari Lorner.

Episode 1

Sari talks about buoyancy. We encourage you to try this at home and see for yourself.  
You will need: Tub of water,  2 equal sized bottles, one filled with water, one with oil.

Sari talks about pufferfish, and how they can blow themselves up like a balloon in defence of predators.
You will need: Balloon, white vinegar, baking soda, an empty bottle with a narrow neck, spoon, funnel or a piece of paper.

Learn all about sawfish that live on the Great Barrier Reef. Did you know they are related to sharks?
You will need: Alfoil, bag of marbles (any size), tub of water, food colouring (optional).

Sari talks about jellyfish. Jellyfish are invertebrates, which means they have no bones, exoskeleton, or shell, and their body is made up of water. 
You will need: Bottle with a lid, water, plastic bag,  rubber band, scissors, food colouring (optional), skewer (optional).

Sari shows you how make your very own coral reef, using leftover arts and craft materials and recycled plastic and paper. 
You will need:  Plasticine, cut up sponges, pipe cleaners, paddle pop sticks, recycled paper,  plastic bottles.

Sari talks about starfish, and how they can live at different depths of the ocean. 
You will need:  5 cups, food colouring, skewers, water, ice cubes, plastic bottle.

Sari talks about turtles and how they navigate by sensing the magnetic field, similar to how sailors use a compass.
You will need:  needle, fridge magnet, small flat floating object (leaf or piece of foil), water compass (or phone compass).
