Listen to Dr Sandi Robb on 4CA with Murray Jones

From personal memories to preserving Cairns’ past

Cairns Museum Executive Officer Dr Sandi Robb joined Murray Jones on his Breakfast program on 4CA for a conversation that began with her arrival in Cairns as “original nomads,” travelling north from Victoria with little more than a car and deciding to stay. Those early personal stories set the scene for a wide-ranging discussion that moved from nostalgic local memories to plans for the city’s 150th anniversary in 2026.

Sandi outlined a year-long program of exhibitions, blogs, and public lectures, with a focus on gathering stories, photographs, and objects that reflect life in Cairns — from early settlement to more recent decades. She spoke about the importance of collecting newer histories, including migrant experiences and everyday items such as Green Island tickets, bus stubs, and family photographs, which will form part of the C150 Legacy Collection.

The conversation also touched on some of Cairns’ more colourful local history. Murray and Sandi swapped memories of the bhagwanis at Rusty’s Markets in the 1980s, the Jolly Roger near the old Captain Cook statue, the Marlin Bar’s reputation, and even a possible link to a George Thorogood song. These are exactly the kinds of personal recollections the Museum hopes to capture alongside more formal records and long-held collections.

The Museum is inviting individuals, families, and community groups to get involved by sharing stories, photographs, documents, or small objects connected to local life. The team can assist with writing, preparing images, and shaping contributions for talks or bulletin articles.
